About Balloon and London Valances

What Both Valance Styles Have in Common

  • Both are made to look like shades, yet are stationary valances. Great if you’re on a budget.
  • Both are made with Roman shade rings in the back, which are tied into place with the cord in the back. We send the valance poufs/folds already set into place, but you may untie the cord in the back and tie again to adjust. The more the cord is tied, the shorter the valance becomes, but it also has more volume and depth. The less the cord is tied, the longer the valance becomes, but it also becomes more casual and has less volume and depth.
  • Both can be made with either a rod pocket or as a board-mounted valance. Most of our clients prefer a rod pocket valance for convenience.
  • Both require a generous amount of fabric yardage to be used in order to properly create the deep folds at the bottom that this window treatment is known for.

Balloon Valance

The balloon valance is made with repeating poufs that project away from the wall. These tend to take up a lot of space, so make sure the area right in front of the balloon valance is without obstruction. Balloon valances can be gathered, but they can also be made with inverted box pleats for a more modern, tailored look without any gathering whatsoever.

London Valance

The London valance also has deep poufs as a balloon valance does. However, what makes it unique is that each side ends in a tail. For standard sized, single windows, you’ll often come across a single pouf in the center that’s framed by tails on each side. The poufs can repeat just they would with a balloon valance to accommodate extra wide windows.
