About This Window Treatment
Adding deep and generous pleats to a valance can give it a rich, custom look with big volume. Our custom inverted box pleated balloon valance is a perfect example of a rich valance with deep pleats. Choose from our wide selection of fabrics. Large-scale prints such as cameo toiles and florals are centered onto each pouf. You can either continue the same fabric in the pleats or choose a contrasting fabric for added interest.
Frequently Asked Questions
In what widths is this valance available?
The box pleated balloon valance can be made in the following widths:
- 37 to 51 inches
- 57 to 65 inches
- 70 to 77 inches
- 82 to 90 inches
- 94 to 100 inches
- 104 to 116 inches
We can make this valance wider than 116 inches if needed. Please contact us for a special order.
Which length should I choose?
We measure the length to the tip of each scoop after the valance is hung. With balloon valances, especially when ample fabric is used in the sewing process, the length is extremely adjustable. That’s because we sew plenty of rings in the back of the valance, allowing you to manually adjust the string. For example, the “long” option means that the valance hangs at about 22 to 24 inches long if you’d like to achieve the look that’s similar to what you see in our product photos. However, keep in mind that you may adjust the string in the back to make the valance slightly shorter or longer than 22 to 24 inches to suit your needs.
Typically, the balloon valance is installed to cover either one third or even two thirds of the length of a window.
Tip: Installing a valance higher will draw the eye up and give the illusion of a higher ceiling.
What kind of hardware do I need?
We recommend a drapery pole between 1 and 1 5/8 inches in diameter.

(In case you’re wondering, the price changes in real time each time you make a change to your custom design. The price is displayed on this page right above the purple “Add to Cart” button.)
How long does it take to ship this valance? Will I be updated?
Depending on the size of your order and whether the fabric is in stock, you could receive your valance in as early as 2 to 3 weeks. However, for most of our customers, the normal turnaround time is about 3 to 5 weeks. We rarely see a 6-week turnaround, but it does happen with some of our larger orders.
We get busier right before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays due to higher demand. Please plan accordingly.
And yes, we understand this is an important purchase for most of our customers. We take ample measures to update our customers via email at least three to four times during the process.
Will the print of the fabric be centered on each section?
We always try to bring out the best in each fabric. If your chosen fabric has a large floral, toile, or medallion print, we’ll try to center it onto each pouf to the best of our ability.
Do I need interlining for this window treatment?
We use a generous amount of fabric when it comes to balloon valances. Most of the product sample photos that you see featured did not require interlining. Having said that, there are some fabrics where interlining is a good idea, such as silks, faux silks, or other lightweight fabrics.
When would I choose the fraction width?
Because each valance is handmade, there may be a deviation of up to a quarter of an inch unless you specify a desired fraction width. For most people who just need an outside mounted valance, this minor deviation is not of great concern.
However, fraction width becomes of great importance when you are mounting the valance inside your window, which is commonly done in smaller rooms or when draperies are used over the valance. Inside widths need to be as exact as a quarter of an inch.
Does this valance have a pleat on each side?
This is a very important question and the answer is yes. Enjoy the valance from all angles, even when viewed from the side. Plus, extra pleats add structure and volume that every balloon valances needs.
Can this valance be gathered?
No, this valance is meant to hang flat across the rod pocket, as shown.
What if I don’t want to add trim?
It’s optional, so you can simply skip it. And if you’ve added it by mistake or changed your mind, you can always delete it in the shopping cart.
Where is this valance made?
All our work is created in our Atlanta, GA workroom.
How do I use this valance with draperies?
Keep in mind that the volume of the valance requires a lot of space. For that reason, if you’ll use draperies over the valance, make sure that the curtain rod for the draperies projects at least 5 inches. You may also install the valance over draperies. In this case, the drapery pole of the balloon valance needs to project at least 5 inches in order to clear the draperies underneath.
Can I send you my own fabric if I don’t see one that I like, or need to match the valance to the rest of my room?
Yes, you can. You don’t need to wait around for us to give you a custom quote. If you wish to send in your own materials and pay for lining and labor only, simply select “Customer’s Own Fabric” under fabrics and continue making your other custom selections. Once you complete the last step of the custom design above, you will immediately see the price displayed at the bottom. However, we ask that you please contact us first before actually sending in the fabric. We must pre-approve your selections first, so we may require a fabric swatch or online link to the fabric that you plan to use.
Suggested Measuring Instructions
Standard Instructions
You must decide whether your installation will be an outside mount or inside mount.
For inside mounts, measure the exact inside of your window and subtract up to a quarter of an inch (1/4″). This is the width that you will need to order.
For outside mounts, we recommend that you measure your window width at the widest part. If your window is framed in wooden molding, make sure to include it in your measurement as well. Add 3 to 5 inches to this measurement. If you plan on installing draperies underneath and space permits, keep in mind that adding 10 to 30 total inches will make the window appear larger.
Special Instructions for Bay, Bow and Corner Windows
For outside mounts – you will need to make sure that there is enough space between each window section. We recommend at least 8 inches of space between each window section for bay and bow windows and at least 10 inches of space between corner windows (if no draperies are installed underneath the valance). You may need to join adjacent decorative poles with a hinged elbow to save space.
For inside mounts, follow standard instructions.
Special Instructions for Arched and Palladium Windows
Follow standard measuring instructions above. Valance is installed at the base of the arch.
Special Instructions for Patio Doors
Valance is not meant to be used on patio doors.
Special Instructions for Sliding Glass Doors
This valance takes up a large amount of space and may only work on rooms with tall ceilings in this case. Make sure that the valance covers the top of the window fully. The trim around your door should not be visible even where the box pleats are at the bottom of the valance.
