About This Window Treatment
While the center swags are shaped in a half circle, the side swags of this window treatment are left a bit longer. This gives the window valance an unusual shape and allows it to frame a window beautifully. The board-mounted valance arrives finished on a lined wooden board and is ready to hang on your wall. The number of flat swags depends on your chosen width. Interlining and trims are optional.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many flat sections will my valance have?
It depends on the width chosen. General guidelines are as follows, but may be changed to adjust for unique fabric requirements:
- 28 to 30 inches wide – two flat swags
- 40 to 44 inches wide – three flat swags
- 53 to 58 inches wide – four flat swags
Can I order a valance width that is not one of your selections?
If the width is less than 28 inches, or any of the widths not listed as selections up to 58 inches, then it isn’t an option. However, if you need a valance that is over 58 inches wide, then we can help. While we may not be able to do a board-mount due to shipping restrictions, we are more than happy to recreate this style on a rod pocket. For this style, we can create a rod pocket to be installed on a continental rod. The rod pocket is sewn in the back only, making the front of the valance stitch-free on top. Please note that we sew the rod pocket by hand, so there will be a slight upcharge for this service. Please contact us for a special order.
How do I install this valance?
Our board mount valance arrives ready to hang from the box. We already install the valance on the board for you and provide the angle brackets for you. You’ll need a drill, some anchors and screws to secure the valance on your wall since it is rather heavy. Two people are needed to install our board-mounted valances.
Which length should I choose?
The length of the valance must be proportional to its width and the overall scale of the room. For example, a 30-inch valance would look best at a 19-inch length, while the 54-inch valance may need to be 22 or 25 inches long. The valances that you see listed in our displayed photo ideas here were 22 inches long and had about 2 inches or so extra added on to that length because of the added tassel trim. Also, be aware that valances that are installed higher up need to be longer. We recommend the 25-inch length for valances that are installed at least 10 feet from the floor, regardless of the chosen width.
NOTE: This valance may be installed onto an adjacent block of windows on the same wall. If this is the case, we recommend that you choose the same length to stay consistent, no matter what the individual widths of the windows are.
Do you offer the box pleat valance in any other shapes?
Yes, we offer it as a straight hem valance with inverted box pleats.

(In case you’re wondering, the price changes in real time each time you make a change to your custom design. The price is displayed on this page right above the purple “Add to Cart” button.)
How long does it take to ship this valance? Will I be updated?
Depending on the size of your order and whether the fabric is in stock, you could receive your valance in as early as 2 to 3 weeks. However, for most of our customers, the normal turnaround time is about 3 to 5 weeks. We rarely see a 6-week turnaround, but it does happen with some of our larger orders.
We get busier right before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays due to higher demand. Please plan accordingly.
And yes, we understand this is an important purchase for most of our customers. We take ample measures to update our customers via email at least three to four times during the process.
Where’s my custom order produced?
Each of our orders is created in our Atlanta, GA workroom.
What if I don’t want to add any trim?
It’s optional, so you can simply skip it. And if you’ve added it by mistake or changed your mind, you can always delete it in the shopping cart.
What’s a projection on a valance?
Since the valance is installed on a board, the board will have some depth. The projection is how far out the front of the valance is from the part that touches the wall.
Which projection do I need?
The 3 1/2-inch projection will work on most windows, but if you need to install a pair of draperies under your valance, you’ll need at least a 5 1/2-inch projection to clear them. The blue valance pictured over the orange silk draperies had a 5 1/2-inch projection for this same reason.
Should I choose interlining?
It is entirely up to you. If you choose a face fabric with a pale or white background, or if it’s a thinner fabric (such as a silk or faux silk), then interlining is highly recommended.
Can I layer this valance over a Roman shade?
Yes, you can. We recommend installing the valance as high as possible to add height and expose more of your Roman shade. Do not make the valance too wide when measuring – this is a common mistake we see when valances are paired with inside-mounted treatments like shades and blinds. You want to cover your window just enough. See below for instructions.
Can I send you my own fabric if I don’t see one that I like, or need to match the valance to the rest of my room?
Yes, you can. You don’t need to wait around for us to give you a custom quote. If you wish to send in your own materials and pay for lining and labor only, simply select “Customer’s Own Fabric” under fabrics and continue making your other custom selections. Once you complete the last step of the custom design above, you will immediately see the price displayed at the bottom. However, we ask that you please contact us first before actually sending in the fabric. We must pre-approve your selections first, so we may require a fabric swatch or online link to the fabric that you plan to use.
Suggested Measuring Instructions
Standard Instructions
Measure your window width at the widest part. If your window is framed in wooden or any other molding, make sure to include it in your measurement as well. Add 3 to 5 total inches to this measurement.
DESIGNER TIP: If you will install draperies underneath this valance, we recommend that you add 10 to 30 inches to your window measurement, if space permits, to make your window appear larger.
Special Instructions for Bay, Bow and Corner Windows
This valance has a lot of weight and thus requires a lot of space. Do not select unless there are at least 12 to 18 inches between the individual window sections, depending on projection chosen. Otherwise, follow standard instructions above.
Special Instructions for Arched and Palladium Windows
Valance is installed at the base of the arch. However, since it is board-mounted, it will only work if the window does NOT have a wooden frame. Please do not purchase this valance if you have an arched or palladium window with a wooden frame and want to install it at the base of the arch.
Otherwise, follow standard measuring instructions above.
Special Instructions for Patio Doors
Not intended for standard patio doors or French doors.
Special Instructions for Sliding Glass Doors
Follow standard instructions above. Just like in the case of patio doors, we recommend installing the valance just high enough to cover the top of the door. In most cases, you should be able to add trim if you’d like, provided that the valance is installed high enough to not be an obstruction.
