About This Window Treatment
This valance is a prime example of how to create a luxurious and heavy window treatment, while also making it modern and clean. This valance doesn’t need any long jabots or heavily gathered swags. Instead, it allows you to modestly display your favorite fabric on its flat swag sections. The straight pattern is broken up with playful inverted box pleats that use a generous amount of fabric without showing off this fact.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many flat sections will my valance have?
It depends on the width chosen. General guidelines are as follows, but may be changed to adjust for unique fabric requirements:
- 28 to 30 inches wide – two flat swags
- 40 to 44 inches wide – three flat swags
- 53 to 58 inches wide – four flat swags
Can I order a valance width that is not one of your selections?
If the width is less than 28 inches, or any of the widths not listed as selections up to 58 inches, then it isn’t an option. However, if you need a valance that is over 58 inches wide, then we can help. While we may not be able to do a board-mount due to shipping restrictions, we are more than happy to recreate this style on a rod pocket. For this style, we can create a hidden rod pocket version to be installed on a continental rod. Please note that we sew the hidden rod pocket by hand, so there will be a slight upcharge for this service. Please contact us for a special order.
How do I install this valance?
All our board mount valances arrive ready to hang. We already install the valance on the board for you and provide the angle brackets for you. You’ll need a drill, some anchors and screws to secure the valance on your wall since it is rather heavy. Two people are needed to install our board-mounted valances.
Which length should I choose?
For sake of comparison, the valances that we have featured in our photos here are either 19 or 21 inches long. We always install our valances closer to the ceiling to allow more natural light in and elongate the room. This longer length is especially necessary if you choose a main fabric with large prints that you want to be centered on each swag section. However, if you’re saving on space, or need a narrow valance in a smaller room, then the 15-inch length will work just fine. Note that adding trim will also add to your selected length, so make sure to account for this when making your length selections.
NOTE: This valance may be installed onto an adjacent block of windows on the same wall. If this is the case, we recommend that you choose the same length to stay consistent, no matter what the individual widths of the windows are.
Do you offer the box pleat valance in any other shapes?
This particular valance has a straight bottom hem. We do offer this valance with a shaped bottom hem though.

(In case you’re wondering, the price changes in real time each time you make a change to your custom design. The price is displayed on this page right above the purple “Add to Cart” button.)
How long does it take to ship this valance? Will I be updated?
Depending on the size of your order and whether the fabric is in stock, you could receive your valance in as early as 2 to 3 weeks. However, for most of our customers, the normal turnaround time is about 3 to 5 weeks. We rarely see a 6-week turnaround, but it does happen with some of our larger orders.
We get busier right before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays due to higher demand. Please plan accordingly.
And yes, we understand this is an important purchase for most of our customers. We take ample measures to update our customers via email at least three to four times during the process.
Where’s my custom order produced?
Each of our orders is created in our Atlanta, GA workroom.
What if I don’t want to add any trim?
It’s optional, so you can simply skip it. And if you’ve added it by mistake or changed your mind, you can always delete it in the shopping cart.
What’s a projection on a valance?
Since the valance is installed on a board, the board will have some depth. The projection is how far out the front of the valance is from the part that touches the wall.
Which projection do I need?
Looking at our sample photos, the ivory and green valance with red ball trim has a 3 1/2-inch projection. The green silk embroidered valance has a 5 1/2-inch projection. The 3 1/2-inch projection will work on most windows, but if you need to install a pair of draperies under your valance, you’ll need at least a 5 1/2-inch projection.
Should I choose interlining?
It is entirely up to you. If you choose a face fabric with a pale or white background, or if it’s a thinner fabric (such as a silk or faux silk), then interlining is highly recommended.
Can I layer this valance over a Roman shade?
Absolutely. A window with both a valance and Roman shade can look very heavy if it isn’t balanced by heavy furniture or other elements of high scale in the room. Luckily, one solution is to choose a simple valance. The lightness and simplicity of this valance is a great complement to a Roman shade.
We recommend installing the valance as high as possible to add height and expose more of your Roman shade. Do not make the valance too wide when measuring – this is a common mistake we see when valances are paired with inside-mounted treatments like shades and blinds. You want to cover your window just enough. See below for instructions.
Can I send you my own fabric if I don’t see one that I like, or need to match the valance to the rest of my room?
Yes, you can. You don’t need to wait around for us to give you a custom quote. If you wish to send in your own materials and pay for interlining and labor only, simply select “Customer’s Own Fabric” under fabrics and continue making your other custom selections. Once you complete the last step of the custom design above, you will immediately see the price displayed at the bottom. However, we ask that you please contact us first before actually sending in the fabric. We must pre-approve your selections first, so we may require a fabric swatch or online link to the fabric that you plan to use.
NOTE FROM OUR WORKROOM: While the accent fabric may not appear to be prominent, it requires almost as much yardage as the main fabric. Keep this in mind when shopping for the fabrics that you’ll be providing to our workroom for you special order.
Suggested Measuring Instructions
Standard Instructions
Measure your window width at the widest part. If your window is framed in wooden or any other molding, make sure to include it in your measurement as well. Add 3 to 5 total inches to this measurement.
DESIGNER TIP: If you will install draperies underneath this valance, we recommend that you add 10 to 30 inches to your window measurement, if space permits, to make your window appear larger.
Special Instructions for Bay, Bow and Corner Windows
This valance has a lot of weight and thus requires a lot of space. Do not select unless there are at least 12 to 18 inches between the individual window sections, depending on projection chosen. Otherwise, follow standard instructions above.
Special Instructions for Arched and Palladium Windows
Valance is installed at the base of the arch. However, since it is board-mounted, it will only work if the window does NOT have a wooden frame. Please do not purchase this valance if you have an arched or palladium window with a wooden frame and want to install it at the base of the arch (please ask us for a special order with a hidden rod pocket instead).
Otherwise, follow standard measuring instructions above.
Special Instructions for Patio Doors
The valance may be installed above your patio or French door. We recommend leaving out the trim in this case. Allow the bottom hem to slightly cover the top of your door and trim, while still being able to open the door without obstruction. Otherwise, follow the standard instructions above.
Special Instructions for Sliding Glass Doors
Follow standard instructions above. Just like in the case of patio doors, we recommend installing the valance just high enough to cover the top of the door. In most cases, you should be able to add trim if you’d like, provided that the valance is installed high enough to not be an obstruction.
